Exploring the Origin of Ghosts

Many acknowledge the spiritual realm’s existence, and even some Christians believe in ghosts. In fact, we find some who consider ghosts to be the souls of deceased loved ones. Individuals report experiencing signs they believe are messages from those who have passed on. These signs can take on various forms, ranging from tangible objects to subtle sensations, all interpreted as loving reminders of the enduring connection between the living and the dead.

One of the most frequently reported signs is the appearance of coins in unexpected places, considered to be signifying that their loved ones are nearby. Other experiences, such as a sudden feeling of warmth when thinking about a deceased loved one or smelling their favorite perfume. People also believe that finding a feather, particularly in an unusual location, often signifies protection and love from those who have passed on because they believe people become angels when they die.

Many actually believe loved ones are looking down from heaven, bringing them messages or praying for them in their time of suffering. How many people have actually consoled their grieving friends with words like, “Even though you can’t see them, their spirits are close and watching over you from above?” It provides solace to the bereaved, creating a sense of connection that eases the pain of separation that we’re feeling. But… is it true?

A Biblical Look in the Face of Death

Looking at the Bible, which illuminates our beliefs with God’s Word, we discover we believed a lie. In 2 Corinthians 5, the Bible tells us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. When a person dies, they go straight into God’s presence or eternal darkness without God, depending on their choices in life. Once there, there is no visiting loved ones or earthly dwellings. Luke 16:26 describes the great chasm that God fixed between realms, preventing anyone from crossing it, and highlights the permanence of their dwelling place. So, then why do we encourage those whose loved ones have passed on that the deceased is watching over them? The Bible instructs us to encourage one another with the hope of the resurrection and eternal life in the wake of a loved one’s passing (see 1 Thessalonians 4). To provide comfort and hope in the face of death, we are to remind other believers that death isn’t the end but the beginning of eternity with God.

But then, how do we explain sightings of ghostly images, or what feels like the way Grandpa used to touch your shoulder? Or how do you explain the objects left for you to find? Are not these things indicators that our deceased loved ones are nearby? What about the warmth of their presence, the smell of their perfume or the cigar smoke that lingers in the air?

Ghosts Masquerading as the Deceased

Perhaps you’ve gone a step further and sought help from a tarot card reader to assure you that your deceased grandmother is okay. How could she possibly have known the nickname only Grandma called you? Or, in your desperation after your husband’s premature death, you gathered with other family members and seek out a medium for a seance. The medium described him perfectly, and before you left, you found a key that belonged to his exact make and model car. Aren’t these experiences proof of the deceased communicating with us?

What many don’t realize is that these are not the spirits of the deceased, or a loved one’s ghost. Rather, they are demonic or familiar spirits who know your family member well and can mimic their actions. They are like their father, the devil, evil imitators masquerading as angels of light. And if you fall for deception, they will lure you into seeking after their signs of comfort, guidance and hope until they’ve drawn you away from God and have gained a foothold over your life.

Personal Confirmation of Their Existence

How can I be so sure? Because as an ex-witch I have not only seen but have interacted with them during the time I spent in the darkness. Believe me, it’s not your family members coming to comfort you, or a game to occupy your time as the night grows longer. They don’t just leave when fall fades away and you’re no longer seeking interaction. They’re here to stay, and unless you’re in Christ, and cast them out, they have every intention of being with you for the long haul.

Exposing Demons and Their Deeds of Darkness

The Bible strictly warns against having any association with darkness and its practices. Leviticus 19:31 says, Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God. This warning is very serious because this sin completed Saul’s wickedness, leading to his rejection by God (1 Chron 10:13).

Ephesians 5:11 states, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” This article has exposed ghosts masquerading as deceased people. It is for our own spiritual and physical well-being that we avoid all works of darkness. Seek God who gave you life and eternity, resist the devil and his demons that you may have life abundantly now and forevermore. In modern day terms, it's time for you to ghost the ghost!
