Cleaning House (Anointing Your Home According to Exodus 12)

Time to Clean House

Think of it kind of like spring cleaning, when you go through your home and thoroughly clean house. Only, it’s not just a physical act, but a spiritual cleansing. Symbolizing the removal of spiritual “leaven” such as pride, malice, and hidden sin from your life and your home. In Exodus 12, the Israelites received instructions from God to search their homes the night before Passover to find any traces of leaven, which they then gathered and burned. After which they were to mark their doorposts with the blood of the Passover Lamb in order to protect their households from the destroyer. We follow this example by walking through our home with a discerning eye and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal anything ungodly that we may have allowed to creep in, then discarding it. For the purpose of this blog, we’re going to focus on anointing your home after you’ve cleansed it.

Since Jesus is our sacrificial Lamb, we no longer use blood for anointing our homes, as the Israelites did. Instead, we symbolically use anointing oil to mark our doorposts for the spiritual cleansing and protection of our home and family from the evil one.

A Word about Anointing Oil

Use olive oil, or the oil of your choice (pray over it to set aside for anointing). Just be careful of your sources. Especially avoid any oil that contains crystals, stones, or glittery additives, because they likely have been consecrated for witchcraft.

My preference is extra-virgin olive oil from Israel blended with biblical herbs of frankincense, myrrh, and spikenard. (To get a sample of the oil I use, go to satower.org to order. You only cover the cost of the shipping/handling.)

It’s important to remember there is nothing magical about the oil. Rather, it’s putting our faith in the finished work of Jesus on the Cross that has power. (The oil itself has no inherent supernatural power. ) It’s purely symbolic. If you choose, you can spiritually anoint your home without oil, simply with prayer.

Marking your doorpost

God instructed the Israelites to put the blood of the Passover lamb on the sides and top of their doorframes, symbolizing their trust in His promise of protection and deliverance. By marking our doors and windows, we put our trust in His divine protection, deliverance and peace.

Prayer, Praise, & Scripture Reading

As we enter into prayer for our home anointing, I suggest we incorporate praise, which ushers in the presence of God and causes the enemy to flee. I put worship music on as I’m praying and then turn the music up and fill my home with praise when I’m done. (Psalm 91 is a fantastic scripture to read, sing, or use as a worship song).

Example Prayer: (Personalize if you so choose)

Father, in the name of Jesus, I anoint this home with oil and ask that you cleanse and seal this entire property for your purpose and glory. I ask Your Will to be accomplished in my life and within this household, and I pray You will receive all the glory. Holy Spirit. I pray for my home and entire household to be covered with the blood of Jesus. I ask you to anoint every wall, door, corner, and crevice of every room in this house with your presence.

I take authority over any unclean spirit or presence lingering in this house, any spirit that has attached itself to my family, and command you to leave in Jesus’ name. And in the name of Jesus, I cancel every attempt by the enemy against me, my family, and our pets, and command all sickness, disease, and plagues to pass over my entire household. I renounce and reject any evil claims over this property and close every open door and every demonic portal, thereby removing any access to this home, in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Anointing: (anoint the top and sides of the door and window frames)

By the power of the blood of Jesus, I anoint and seal this doorway (window, wall, etc.). Heavenly Father, I ask you to place a hedge of protection around this entire property and send your angels to guard every entrance to this house. Lord, let no evil or harm befall this home, nor my family. Nor let any plague or deadly pestilence approach this habitation, in Jesus’ name. Shield, protect and deliver us from all evil, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
