The Significance of Jesus Walking in the Temple

In the Book of John, we find Jesus’ walking in the temple on a winter day in Jerusalem (see John 10:22). It was the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) and the Jews surrounded Him, asking if He were the Messiah? His response stirred them as He told them that His sheep heard His voice and followed Him, and that He gave them eternal life. But what really set them off was His statement that He and His Father are one. For in this statement, He declared Himself to be the light of the world and the good shepherd, both of which were terms used to describe the Messiah by the Jews. With that, they were ready to stone Him, but He escaped and went to the place where John had baptized Him, many who followed, believed.

Rededication of the Desecrated Holy Temple in Jerusalem

It’s not by coincidence that we find Jesus in the temple at the Feast of Dedication, which was a time of celebration for the recapture, cleansing and rededication of the temple from the 2nd century BC Seleucid King Antiochus IV, foretold in the Book of Daniel. Antiochus, who called himself Epiphanes, meaning God manifested, sought to destroy the worship of God, forcing the Israelites to assimilate with the Hellenization culture, suppressing their traditions, and going as far as declaring it both illegal and punishable to death, to preach or teach the Word of God. The crisis reached a tipping point when Antiochus abolished temple sacrifices, plundered, and then desecrated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. He removed all sacred vessels while erecting an idol of Baal Shamen (Zeus) in their place, thus turning the Temple of the One True God into a blasphemous pagan temple.

Antiochus the Predecessor of the Antichrist

Antiochus is a type of the antichrist, who, like his predecessor, desired to be God and came against Israel. We find the similarities are striking; Antiochus declared all nations would be as one, just as the antichrist will establish a one-world government by uniting all nations under his rule. Antiochus used military conquest and cultural assimilation to force other nations to fight against Israel, much like the antichrist will gain the surrounding nations’ support by brokering a peace treaty with Israel, breaking the covenant, and uniting the nations against Israel. The text describes both Antiochus and the antichrist as blasphemous. Just as Antiochus forced the Israelites to abandon God’s ways, forget His laws, and adopt a false religion by sacrificing to the false idol in the temple, the antichrist will totally oppose every law of God and establish the one-world religion described in Revelation 17:1-18. Ultimately, the Antichrist or the “man of sin” will “sit as God in the temple of God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). This is the ‘abomination of desolation,’ a significant violation of the covenant with God and a sign that the end of the age is upon us.

Recognizing the End-times in an Ancient Event

We see now how Hanukkah, which means dedication, foreshadows the events that will occur at the end of the age. In Matthew 24:15, Jesus tells His inquiring disciples that when they “see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place,” they will know the great tribulation is at hand and of the approaching judgment. Ironically, Jesus speaks of a future event in light of a past event that occurred at the Feast of Dedication, or Hanukkah. The abomination is a pivotal event in Jesus’ end-time teachings. He urges his disciples when they see this come to flee for the mountains, to separate themselves from the impending destruction.

The End-time Remnant

Until that day, we have a battle before us. We must stand strong in our faith, not giving in to our fleshly desires that the enemy will use to seduce us. As warriors in Christ, we must rise to the occasion and embrace the zeal of God, which coincides with the Maccabees, refusing to succumb to false gods and pagan practices imposed upon us. We must hold fast to a transformative passion rooted in a desire to please God, advance His glory, and live according to His will. And to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. Though many fall away, a true remnant will remain in the end-times who Satan makes war with. These are those who obey God, keep His commandments, and have the testimony of Jesus, which is the spirit of prophecy (see Rev: 19:10).
