The Unseen Forces of Protection

In Christianity, angels often act as divine messengers, offering guidance and protection to the faithful. Biblical stories recount instances where angels intervened to save individuals from danger, embodying the notion of divine protection. In these narratives, angels offer both physical and emotional support, reinforcing the idea that believers are not alone in their struggles.

Reflecting My Past Relationship

It was my high school sweetheart, though there was nothing sweet about it. After graduation, we had parted ways because of incompatibility. Over the past several years, he had become a heavy drug user, and a dealer at that. I had caught him with another girl; she reminded me of myself before I had decided that I wanted a better life. Even though we ended things, he wished to keep seeing me without commitment. To avoid repercussions, I reluctantly agreed. Basically, I was afraid of what he would do if I said no, so I mostly tried to avoid him. Turmoil rooted our relationship, as his dangerous lifestyle and controlling nature compromised my personal safety.

A Night of Terror

I had gone on with my life, and then he invited me to a 4th of July party, which I declined because I had prior commitments for Independence Day. As the narrative unfolds, that denial became the catalyst for a significant, life-threatening encounter. He called soon after I had arrived home that night and demanded to see me. I initially refused until he threatened to wake up the neighborhood and began honking his horn. It was then that I realized he was in front of my house. My parents didn’t like him, and I knew they’d be furious with him creating a scene, so I agreed to come out despite my inner unease that I hadn’t yet learned to discern. I stopped before walking out the door and prayed. This moment of supplication marked the beginning of what felt like a supernatural intervention.

I had no sooner got into his car than he locked the doors and began hitting me. I began screaming, and he pulled over in the closed gas station on the corner to continue his beating. He did wake up the neighborhood, or more adequately my screams did, which sent my parents and neighbors running to the gas station. Only when he saw them coming, he hit the gas and zoomed off. We drove about four blocks before he turned down the street and pulled over. This time, he began forcing himself on me while I fought him off. I remember the taste of his blood when I bit his lips as they pressed hard against mine. Then, during his attack, a paradox emerged.

Divine Intervention

Time seemed to stand still. At the critical moment when he raised his arm in aggression, a divine opportunity arose, allowing for my narrow escape. Seizing the opportunity, I somehow unlocked the door and got out of the car. I bolted up the steps of the only illuminated house before he was able to exit the vehicle. I banged on the door while ringing the bell until the door opened. A huge, imposing man answered, seemingly placed there at the right moment to serve as a shield against my threat. He made even a heavyweight champion appear small. I slipped beneath his arm and stood behind this muscular figure as my attacker came to a halt. "What's going on here? "the man said. My attacker retreated, running down the street, his abandoned car still running. This encounter led to a profound realization. The chance occurrence of the only porch-lit house, the sudden constraints of time, and the imposing man painted the picture of a divine orchestrator at work.

A few days later, I returned to the house that had rescued me, wanting to thank the owner for his intervention. I found the house empty and unoccupied. It was then that I realized God had answered my prayer and I had encountered more than a man... but an angel.

Reflections on Survival

This experience resonates with me on numerous levels. It taught me about resilience and the importance of recognizing dangerous situations before they unfold. I learned that inner guidance, often ignored in moments of pressure, can be critical to making the right choices. While that night was one of the darkest I’ve faced, it brought light to my understanding of personal strength and the powerful presence of protection, even from the most unexpected sources.
